What’s In a Name

Passage: 1st Chronicles 4:9
Service Type:

There are some names that, when spoken, bring certain memories or feelings to mind.  For example, when we hear the name Judas, we may think of the disciple who betrayed Jesus.  When we hear the name Peter, we may think of the disciple with the foot -shaped mouth.  There was another in the Bible who's name also had negative connotations and his name was Jabez.  His name actually means "One who gives pain and sorrow."  What was Jabez's mother thinking when she gave him this name?  She thought his life would be one of pain and sorrow to others.  How would you like to live with a name like Jabez?  Maybe your name isn't Jabez but maybe you too are living under the hurtful expectations of another.  What will you do, how do you respond?  Listen along to discover in part one of this two part message just how Jabez responded and overcame the expectations of his mother.  Will you respond the same way as Jabez or will you let the thoughts and words of another determine how you live?
